The History

The use of CBD topically has a history spanning thousands of years, with the earliest documented applications found in ancient Egypt and China.

1500 BC (Ancient Egypt): The Ebers Papyrus, an ancient Egyptian medical text, is among the first records of the plant being prepared in balms and poultices for topical use to treat dry skin and inflammation.

2700 BCE (Ancient China): Emperor Shen Nung included the plant in the "Shennong Ben Cao Jing," recommending it for skin conditions and inflammation.

Ancient India: Known as "Vijaya," it was used in Ayurvedic medicine for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects on the skin.

Although the plant has been used for thousands of years, the specific compound CBD was not isolated and identified until 1940. However, historically using the whole plant in salves likely delivered CBD and other cannabinoids directly to the skin for therapeutic benefits.

The Benefits

When CBD (cannabidiol) is used as a topical it may offer significant skin benefits -

  • anti-inflammatory

  • antioxidant

  • hydrating agent to dry skin and help it retain moisture.

  • Pain relief when applied topically, it may help relieve localised pain in muscles and joints.

It may help soothe conditions like

  • eczema

  • psoriasis

  • acne - It may help control acne by regulating oil (sebum) production and reducing the inflammatory response in the skin.

Unlike some medical creams it may help these conditions while at the same time calming redness and reducing sensitivity.

CBD also fights free-radical damage, aiding in anti-aging efforts. As a strong antioxidant, CBD helps protect skin from environmental stress and free radicals, which can minimize signs of aging, such as wrinkles.
